A Tribute to Rich Mullins...

Rich Mullins

October 21, 1955 - September 19, 1997

His music... his faith... his passion...
his life...

All The Way My Savior Leads Me

All the way my Savior leads me
what have I to ask beside
can I doubt his faithful mercies
who through life has been my guide
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort
ere by faith in him to dwell
for I know whatever fall me
Jesus doeth all things well

All the way my Savior leads me
and He cheers each winding
path I tread
gives me strength for every trial
and He feeds me with the living bread
and tho my weary steps may falter
and my soul a thirst may be
gushing from a rock before me
lo a spirit joy I see

And all the way my Savior leads me
oh the fullness of His love
perfect rest in me is promised
in my father's house above
when my spirit clothed immortal
wings it's flight to realms of the day
this my song through endless ages
Jesus led me all the way

"Ain't it funny what people say / And ain't it funny what people write / And ain't it funny how it hits you so hard - in the middle of the night..." It seems the only words I have are Rich's own... and the words of a story he once told seem to be hitting especially hard...

Rich had opened the song "Ready For The Storm" with a story of how, in Ireland, the women would knit their own special designs into the sweaters the men would wear to sea because the waters there could be so very rough and treacherous. So treacherous that if, by chance, their ship were caught in a storm and the crew lost, their bodies would be beaten and broken beyond recognition by the time they reached the shores. The only way at times for the women to recognize them would be by the designs on the tattered remains of their sweaters...

Reflecting on the story as he later brought the concert to a close, Rich left us with a beautiful thought... He said that, you know, one day, after all our trials and tribulations here on earth, we're all gonna wash up on that other shore, beaten and broken beyond recognition. A couple of angels might walk by and shake their heads saying, "Man, we really need to get this garbage cleaned up..." And as they stoop to carry away the tattered figure, Jesus walks up, stopping them in their tracks. He stares quietly for a moment, then, with a loving smile he points and says "No, wait... I know that one... don't you see... that's my sweater..."

It may be a bit paraphrased now and I don't think my telling of it does it justice like he could have, but this story really touched my heart and stuck with me.

I know we all share in the grief and the deep sense of loss at Rich's passing, but I also know Rich is home now and, with this story in mind, I can't help but imagine he's probably up there right now just walkin' (most likely barefoot) and talkin' with God... wearing Jesus' sweater...

I want so much to thank Rich for all the years of music he has given us, for the joy with which he sang, and for the way he lived his life because I know he truly lived what he said and believed. He ran to God with a reckless passion and gave his all in continuing the legacy of Jesus' love -- a legacy that will continue for all generations.

There is music you make and there is music that makes you...

Liner notes for "Madeline's Song" from Beggarman's latest release, Fallen Deep:

"Madeline was a baby who was born with multiple birth defects. Although she was profoundly deaf, Rich Mullins would whisper his prayer requests to her - knowing that God somehow heard the untainted prayers of a child. Rich wrote this song for Madeline while she was still alive, but he never recorded it. During our summer tour with him in 1997, we played this song every night and prayed for her daily. Our goal in recording this song is to offer listeners the opportunity to hear this song in close form to which it was performed during that last summer of Rich's life."

Thank you, Eric and Britt, for allowing me to play it here. Peace of Christ to you...

If you are interested in learning more about St. Francis of Assisi, the film Brother Sun, Sister Moon, directed by Franco Zeffirelli, is a beautiful introduction to his life. It is an emotionally stirring story focusing on the early years of Francesco Bernardone (Francis) who renounced the wealth of his family to lead a life of utter simplicity.
